Crunchyroll revealed at New York Comic Con on October 13 that Kaiju No. 8, a popular sci-fi monster fighting show from Shonen Jump, will only be available on the anime streaming service next spring.
The short summary of Kaiju No. 8 is like what would happen if an adult Peter Parker jumped right into a Godzilla story. The story is about Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man who missed his chance to fight on the front lines with his childhood friend Mina Ashiro. As a sanitation worker, Kafka’s job is to clean up after huge kaiju fights that destroy cities. It’s a thankless, dirty job. At the same time, Mina is the brave leader of Japan’s Kaiju Defense Force, which she does to protect her country.
The story of Kafka’s life is full of missed chances. Until he has a strange experience with a monster that gives him the power to change into a humanoid kaiju. Call him a Kaiju Man if you will. Now Kafka has to hide his new alter ego while he and Mina work toward Kafka’s childhood dream of becoming a hero who fights giant monsters.

The cartoon will be made by Production I.G. (Ghost in the Shell), which is a big name in animation. Studio Khara worked on director Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion rebuild films and his tokusatsu movies Shin Godzilla, Shin Ultraman, and Shin Kamen Rider, so their work on Kaiju No. 8 is kind of a big deal (no pun meant). The series will also have drawings for kaiju made by Studio Khara. The people who are making the anime version of Kaiju No. 8 are very good at making anime in this style.
